Cold, Dark & Wet couldnt dampen our Spirits

Light the Night Walk for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

We got soaked in a cold cold downpour before the race but the rains stayed away for the entire walk down University Ave. from Queens Park.

It was a real emotional moment as we walked past the front of Sick Kids Hospital and there were hundreds of kids in the Atrium windows on several levels waiving their little LED flashlights that we gave them.

Truly an awesome and inspiring evening!

In the end we were able to raise over $2,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma research.

Thanks to all who helped us.

Fall Fair Beer Tent Charity Fundraiser to eradicate Polio

How many Rotarian's does it take to pour a beer?

Last year Bill & Melinda Gates donated $100 million to Rotary International on the promise that RI would match it over the next 3 years to eradicate Polio in the World.

Rotarians have had feet on the ground for the past several years providing inoculations for children in countries where Polio has not been eradicated but the efforts need to be ramped up to ensure this horrible disease does not spread anymore.

If you would like to help, please leave me a comment on this post with your email address and I'll send you an email describing how you can help us.

Check out the pictures to see how we have fun raising the funds for this worthy initiative.

President Elect State of the Nation/Fireside Chat/Classification Talk

Attached, you will find a copy of the presentation from this am's meeting for your reference.
The link for the Unicef State of the World's Children 2008 report can be found at:

Hopefully you learned a little today about the basic flavour and direction for our club this year.
Our 2008/09 Board had an initial kick-off meeting 2 weeks ago and each Director was given the the task of working with Chuck on the budget for each of their individual areas.

The results of this will be presented by each Director at the next Board meeting in mid July and voted on.

So as far as specific projects (like our project to reduce child mortality), we should be in a position to talk to the club about that later in July.

If you have any suggestions or input, please send them to the Director responsible for that particular area and copy me on it.

I will try to send our Club an update at least a couple of times a month about what's happening in RI, District, and our Board to keep you attuned to the issues so you dont feel like you're in a vacum.

That's all for now.

Something Worthy Idea

Below is idea from Nancy for comment by the rest of the folks. I am posting until Nancy get the hang of it, yeah like I am all that conversant. LOL

Gordon

"I think I have a really good idea to reflect on the RI theme this coming year, and your own theme.
I have in mind that we connect with the Doctor in charge of Pediatrics at Brampton Civic Hospital, and find out specific equipment or needs they have to improve hospital care for children in our own hospital.
We could fundraise for a specific piece of equipment, surgical or otherwise; or work to help liase with others to grant wishes to ill children; or help the families in crisis tending a sick child. The possibilities are infinite, and definitely something worthy! We could even cluster, if you think appropriate.
YIR,
Nancy"

Live Video Feed

Hey fellow Rotarian's.

I hope everyone had a fantastic time at our inaugural kick-oof board session held at the Johnston residence on Friday night!

It wasnt really a board meeting so much as it was a fun time to get to know each other so I hope everyone had some fun with it - I know I did judging from the 1400mg of ibuprofen I had to eat in the morning!

Anyway, you can check out a short recording of some of the festivities at the link above.

I also wanted to start a bit of a discussion here about your thoughts on this live video thing at our Friday morning meetings.

I really want to do it because I think it would help market Rotary and in particular, help with adopting new members on board - ie they could participate with us on-line for a try-before-you-buy associate membership.

Also, I would like to use this as a monthly theme arrangement to bring in a Rotarian(s) from a club in another country and we could have a breakfast theme meeting around it.

I do understand and appreciate that some of you may be concerned about privacy issues - if that is the case, we could still do the live video thing however, I could lock out all viewers except those that we accept with a login.

Please post your thoughts on this topic by clicking on the "comment" link below.

have a fantastic day .....your PE, Shane

Welcome All the Presidents of the Brampton Rotary's

Welcome to your new Blog everyone!

Please make a post on any topic you would like - as I see the posts start to come in, I'll start pulling the post threads into category topics to keep track of it all.

If you look to the right hand side of the Blog, you can click on the quick links to go to our shared Calendar - feel free to add in your fundraisers, meetings, or whatever significant dates you think would be interesting for other Brampton Rotary Presidents & PE's.

There is also a shared Documentation repository where you can put up presentations, spreadsheets or Word documents and anyone registered to the Blog can input to the documents so we can co-create some great stuff together.

If we cant all make a meeting, we could easily use the Google Talk (Instant Messaging) feature or if you click on the Google Homepage, you will see that I have added Skype. Skype is a voice/Video conferencing platform. We can video or voice conference together for free. Click on the Skype Widget (bottom left hand collumn) and sign up for an ID, get a microphone for your computer and voilla - we are conferencing together without having to be face to face. If you use this feature together with the shared docs, you dont even really need to be face to face (although it is nice to get together face to face - this is the next best thing)

This is your collaboration toolset for us to work on joint initiatives and generally just keep up to date with each other. It is much more powerful than ClubRunner because EVERYONE can input to the Blog.

Enjoy ..... Shane

PS: If you have any technical difficulties, send me an email to shanejohnston@rogers.com and I'd be happy to help. ...SJ

Herding Cats Video

Calandar & managing documents

I have been testing out a few different options for us to share calandar appointments and submit documents or spreadsheets for member contribution. At first I was considering a static solution but a more dynamic solution is available called Google apps.

We would all have to have a GMail email account to use it but it seems to be relatively easy to set up. We would each have an email like shane@herdingcats.com

Has anyone ever used Google apps before? It also has built in IM (instant messaging) and free voice conferencing so if we cant make a meeting in person we could set up to talk virtually online.

More to come later ...Shane

Welcome to your new BLOG fellow Brampton Cluster Rotarians

Here it is guys! This is the beginning of your new collaboration platform. It's yours to do with whatever you please. Use it to ask questions of your Area Governor (or was that Assistant Governor -I can't remember) or post your ideas for a new simplified grant project, or just ask questions of your peer Presidents -whatever floats your boat.

I'm here if you have any technical questions about how to use the site. Remember, the BLOG is yours to utilize so the more input you provide the better it becomes.

Good luck and happy blogging!
